Do you remember when you hit the big 4-0 and everyone older said, “Oh, you’re going to love your 40s”?
Turns out, they weren’t lying and it’s called the fuck-off 40s. Who knew?
At first, it sounded a bit cheeky, but honestly? The people-pleaser in me was screaming, “Oh no, we can’t just tell everyone to fuck off!” Meanwhile, the tired, overworked, underpaid mum in me was like, “Yes. Yes, we can.”
So, whether it’s some magical hormonal shift or just the sheer exhaustion of giving a crap for decades, you find yourself saying it more and more.
Someone gives you side-eye at Coles? “Nah, fuck off.” Random mum drama at school drop-off? “Yep, no thanks, fuck off.”
And it feels so good.
But... here’s the thing. Along with this newfound freedom, the 40s also come with a few surprises -
That fear of sneezing or laughing too hard because, well, leaks.
The energy? Gone. Like, completely MIA.
Cooking? Who has the time? Coffee feels like the only food group some days.
Weight? Creeping on, especially around the belly.
Perimenopause? Menopause? Oh, she’s here in full force.
Your 40s are for saying no to what drains you and yes to what fuels you.
It’s not ageing that holds you back—it’s forgetting your worth. The 40s and beyond are your time to remember.

And while you’re busy shouting fuck off to the world, you also realise your friendships have shifted. Your body feels like it’s betraying you. And you’ve accidentally stumbled into personal development…. reading the books, trying the things you swore you never would, and maybe even poking at that childhood trauma people keep mentioning (but only a little, because yikes).
So, here’s what happens next -
You give dieting another go…. strict during the day, but let’s be honest, it’s baked beans or crackers and cheese for dinner because you’re wrecked.
And here’s where I beg you to stop.
Stop giving up on yourself.
Yes, you’re getting older, and yes, things are shifting. But that doesn’t mean you just throw in the towel and say, “Well, I guess this is it.”
Here’s what I need you to hear -
Don’t write off your tiredness as “just getting older.” There’s a reason you’re feeling like this, and we can do something about it.
Stop blaming age for everything… it’s not an excuse to settle for feeling blah.
Please, for the love of all things Tim Tams, don’t eat a whole packet because “why not?”
