Healing in Motion: How Emotional Momentum Shapes Your Transformation
By Kim Herman – Holistic Trauma Therapist | Naturopath | Spiritual Teacher | Holistic Healer
“Progress begins with one moment of safety, one breath at a time.”
Have you ever noticed that once one part of your life starts to feel lighter, other parts begin to shift too — almost like they’re catching the wave of change?
That cascading effect is what I call emotional momentum. It’s the movement and energy that builds when your inner world begins to heal, creating ripples in how you show up in your relationships, career, health, confidence, and future.
But momentum doesn’t always come easily. Sometimes it feels elusive — like one step forward, three steps back. If you’ve ever felt stuck, here’s the truth: your body and subconscious are not working against you… they’re working to protect you.
Emotional Pain and Trauma Put the Brakes On
When the nervous system has lived in survival mode for years, it becomes cautious.
Even when your conscious mind wants healing, love, purpose, or progress, your subconscious may still be running an outdated safety program:
“Don’t move too fast. Don’t trust too much. Don’t get hurt again.”
That’s why so many people feel stalled even when they’re “trying hard” to heal. It’s not failure — it’s protection. And that’s why the first step is always regulation before acceleration.
"You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step." – Martin Luther King Jr.
Momentum Isn’t Created by Pushing Harder
"True healing happens when we become the safe space we never had." – Dr. Nicole LePera
We’ve been conditioned to think momentum comes from discipline or willpower. But for those recovering from trauma, pushing harder often leads to burnout or shutdown.
Real momentum starts when your nervous system finally trusts that it’s safe to move forward. When the body feels safe, the mind opens — and energy returns.
This is what I see daily in my work with women:
A client sets a boundary for the first time.
Someone allows themselves to cry without shame.
Another wakes up without the familiar heaviness of dread.
To the outside world, these may look small. But to someone who has lived in freeze or fawn mode for years? They’re monumental. That’s momentum.
"Healing doesn't mean the damage never existed. It means the damage no longer controls our lives." – Akshay Dubey
The Subconscious: The Engine of Momentum
Around 95% of our thoughts, behaviors, and habits are driven by the subconscious mind. That includes the beliefs we quietly carry:
“I’m not safe.”
“I’m not worthy.”
“If I slow down, everything will fall apart.”
If these are running in the background, they act like a handbrake on your progress — no matter how much your conscious self wants change.
That’s why in my sessions, I work directly with the subconscious. We don’t just talk about what happened; we help the body and mind release emotional residue and rewrite belief systems that formed during painful experiences.
When those deeper patterns shift, momentum doesn’t need to be forced — it flows, naturally, like a wave.
Small Shifts, Big Ripples
If you’re ready to begin creating momentum, start small. Here are practices you can use today:
Regulate first. Try daily heart coherence breathing: inhale for 4, exhale for 6, focusing on your heart space.
Reframe one belief. Replace a limiting thought with: “I’m learning to do things differently now.”
Track emotional wins. Write down small daily moments of courage.
Surround yourself with resonance. Healing in community amplifies momentum through shared energy.
When Momentum Feels Scary
Sometimes, even progress can feel threatening. If you’ve lived in survival mode for years, peace may feel foreign. That’s okay.
Momentum doesn’t always look like hustle or chaos. It can look like:
A still moment of calm.
A quiet breath that doesn’t end in tears.
A pause where you feel safe, present, and whole.
You don’t have to wait for the “perfect moment” to heal. You just need one breath, one pause, one decision. From there, momentum builds with every courageous step you take toward yourself.
