Next Voice Rising Award
1. When did you realize the power of your voice?
I realized the power of my voice when I stepped out of my career in TV working for other people, and began my own company. I began to trust that I had experience, worthiness and an important message to share with others. Not only did others start to take me seriously, but they also began to realise they could take similar risks too.
2. What cause, message, or story matters most to you?
My company and my mission at Big Stories Little Films, is to encourage others to connect to their family stories and histories. Too often we think we live in a vacuum, that the world has only ever been the way it is today, and that there is nothing that the generations before us can teach us. My mission is to encourage intergenerational storytelling so we connect to our ancestral line, our history, and therefore better understand ourselves and our own future.
3. How has speaking up changed your life or others' lives?
Speaking up has made me more confident, more aware of my own energy and my own thoughts, and more inspired to live a life by design – not just the life that society tells me I should be happy with.
4. What resistance or fear did you have to overcome?
Fear regularly sneaks in, but I remind myself often that I chose to take the path less travelled, I want to take risks, I want to step into new territory and become the person I am meant to be. Yes, it’s less safe, and some days that can feel scary, but I remind myself I am doing this for my family, for my children, and for myself so I can be satisfied I lived my fullest life.
5. How do you stay brave when using your voice feels scary?
I have lots of tools to help me stay brave on the days where I am tested – I meditate, I exercise, I have a good honest chat with my husband, I listed to a podcast, I read, I do Zumba! Anything to help me shift gear, clear my energy, and keep going!
